Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Give Love To ‘Avatar’ And John Hughes
Awards season 2010 marched on Friday night (January 15), as the 15th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards trophies were handed out in a star-studded ceremony. Whether the Oscar picture became clearer is anyone’s guess, but this much is obvious: Critics apparently love bomb-squad dramas, blue aliens and Nazi killers.

Paul McCartney, Matt Damon, Sandra Bullock, Julianne Moore and dozens of other top celebs were at the show, hosted by veteran Hollywood/Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth — who at one point gestured to her low-cut dress and asked Quentin Tarantino if he had seen her inglourious basterds. It was only one of many memorable moments that took place at the show, involving such diverse folks as Kevin Bacon, Death Cab for Cutie and Sarah Silverman.
“This guy, he directed this movie in 24 days,” marveled Jeff Bridges, picking up a Best Actor trophy for his work as a broken-down country singer, giving all credit to rookie “Crazy Heart” director Scott Cooper. “He hadn’t directed a high school play, nothing. And he comes up with this!”
“There’s lots of people to thank for what got you here,” Tarantino said upon receiving the Best Original Screenplay award for “Basterds,” thanking his actors — or, more specifically, their intelligence. “My material is not easy. It’s hard. I cannot have dumb actors do my dialogue. I’ve tried it, and it was a disaster.”
Although “The Hurt Locker” won Best Picture, the night’s biggest winner was James Cameron’s blockbuster “Avatar.” Sweeping through such technical awards as Best Sound, Best Visual Effects and Best Art Direction, it took home a total of six awards (including Best Action Movie) to lead the pack. Other big winners included “Basterds” (Best Original Screenplay, Best Acting Ensemble, Christoph Waltz for Best Supporting Actor), Mo’Nique (Best Supporting Actress), Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker”) and “The Hangover” (Best Comedy Movie). An extremely rare tie (!) had Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock sharing the honors for Best Actress.
The night’s most provocative moment might have come courtesy of Sarah Silverman and Adam Lambert. When they took the stage to present an award together, the comedian spoofed Lambert’s recent controversies by revealing that she, too, enjoys the company of men. “I love to scissor with dudes,” Sarah Silverman mock-proclaimed as the “American Idol” alumni grinned. “Get over it, America. It’s 2010!”

The Army bomb-disposal specialist so memorably played by Jeremy Renner in the extraordinary battlefield drama The Hurt Locker operates with the swagger of a hothead in a job that depends on cool. That cowboy attitude exasperates one combat-weary member (Anthony Mackie) of his Baghdad-based Bravo Company team and frightens another (Brian Geraghty) to furious tears. What’s the source of this grim bravado? Is this decent man’s addiction to adrenaline the cost to today’s American soldier of volunteering for such a crazy assignment, one that requires a husband with a family thousands of miles away to lie down in the road in the hot sun next to a live bomb to disarm a deadly device while locals whose language he can’t understand stare impassively?
It so happens that The Hurt Locker takes place in Iraq. But geography is almost beside the point. What makes the film so essential is its pinpoint accuracy in mapping the disorienting roads a man can walk down when his job keeps him so close to death, working for what sometimes feels like a distant principle. Director Kathryn Bigelow and journalist-screenwriter Mark Boal (whose blunt, vivid script is based on reports from his 2004 stint in Baghdad embedded with an Army bomb squad) probe the intersection of bravery and obsession, of risk and responsibility. (Guy Pearce and Ralph Fiennes make brief, jolting cameo appearances as similar risk-takers.) The result is an intense, action-driven war pic, a muscular, efficient standout that simultaneously conveys the feeling of combat from within as well as what it looks like on the ground.
